A Sunnyvale, California customer called in to the Forever Greens office in Livermore one hot day in July, to request a free estimate to have a bocce court and some ground cover put in at her home. She was particularly interested in our hybrid bocce court with putting green, and was hopeful that our knowledgeable staff could assist her with deciding on a ground cover that would best suit her home. Our courteous office staff gathered her information, and set up an estimate appointment with Frank, one of the Forever Greens partners. Once on site, the first task at hand was to survey and measure the area where the bocce court/putting green would be installed. It was decided that a 10Ûª by 35Ûª (350 square foot) framed court would be an ideal size for her back yard.

Beautiful Ground Covers for Any Budget
After looking at a few of the currently popular ground cover options that Forever Greens installs, she chose mulch that is created from shredded redwood bark, commonly called ÛÏGorilla HairÛ. Customers occasionally choose this over other ground covers because its wiry hair-like texture helps it to bond together, preventing movement in the wind or rain. It is also less expensive than other ground cover materials such as rock and bark, yet still provides a magnificent fa̤ade for the landscape. Now that everything was measured and ready to go, it was time to place the product orders and set a date to begin installation.
Perfectly Drained Bocce Ball Court
The Sunnyvale customer opted to have their project begin the first week in December, so the Forever Greens installation crew arrived early one morning to get started. Before construction of the bocce court with built-in putting green could begin, the ground had to be cleared and excavated to a smooth level surface. The area where the court was to be placed had an issue with water build-up when it rained, so the installers dug out a small trench and placed a drain line that connected to the mainline for the home. This extra step ensures that water will never sit on the court, which could damage the turf and warp the bumper boards. Once the drain work was complete, the Forever Greens crew built the bocce court frame, then began placing layers of gopher guard, drain rock and decomposed granite, also referred to as DG. The layers were compacted to ensure a solid base for the bocce and putting green surface. One putting cup was marked and cut at each end of the court, and the synthetic turf was now ready to be installed.
Putting Green and Bocce Ball with Tournament Quality Standards
Global Syn-TurfÛªs Poly Pro Putt was chosen to create the surface for the bocce court with putting green. The artificial turf was rolled and cut to the measurements of the court frame, then weighted down with fine mesh sand that was brushed in and rolled to create a tournament speed surface. The putting cup holes were cut out, and a beautiful redwood bumper was secured inside the frame. In order to create the solid bocce court surface, 2 specially designed removable cup plugs were placed into the putting cups. The Forever Greens crew spread the Gorilla Hair ground cover around the edges of the court, and project was complete. The customer was overjoyed to have it finished so quickly, and could not wait to show it off to friends and family who were coming to visit for the holidays.
